Correct Score Predictions: Does Extra Time Count?
Learn how stoppage time, extra time and penalties affect correct-score comparisons, and what to check before grading football software predictions.

A correct-score forecast needs more than two numbers. It needs a clear finishing point: the end of normal time, the end of extra time, or a separately defined period. Without that detail, a prediction and a result can look identical while describing different events.
For a forecast explicitly defined as 90 minutes plus stoppage time, extra-time goals are outside its scope. For any betting selection, check the named market and the operator’s settlement rules; the Laws of the Game do not set betting terms.
Why this matters for autumn cup research
As checked on 2 October 2026, UEFA’s calendar lists the Women’s Europa Cup knockout draws for today and round-of-16 first legs for 28–29 October. This is a timely reason to understand the difference between a single-match score and progression through a tie. It is not a forecast for any participant or confirmation that a particular software product covers the competition.
Stoppage time and extra time are different
IFAB Law 7 describes two 45-minute halves and the referee’s allowance for time lost. A goal in second-half stoppage time belongs to that half; the clock showing 90+4 does not mean a separate extra-time period has begun.
IFAB Law 10 treats extra time and a penalty shoot-out as procedures that competition rules may use when a winner is needed. A shoot-out takes place after the match has ended. Keep its tally separate from goals scored during play.
One match can have several relevant score records
The following is an invented teaching example, not a fixture, software output or recommended selection.
| Checkpoint | Illustrative score | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| End of normal time, including stoppages | 1–1 | The regulation-time result |
| End of extra time | 2–2 | The score after the additional periods |
| Penalty shoot-out | Home team wins 4–3 | The separate shoot-out outcome |
A 1–1 regulation-time forecast should be compared with the first row. The later 2–2 score does not change what happened at the earlier checkpoint. Equally, selecting the team that progresses is a different question from predicting either exact score. In a two-leg tie, aggregate goals add another record to keep separately.
What a software screenshot can tell you

The image displays three score candidates and goals percentages. It does not visibly explain extra-time settlement. Do not infer those rules from a score alone. Check the product documentation or ask support which period the output estimates before comparing it with a results service.
Our Spain U20–Mexico U20 correct-score guide explains the screenshot in its original context. A selected example does not establish overall accuracy, profit or pre-match publication timing.
Save the definition beside the forecast
Before reviewing a result, record the teams, competition, forecast capture time, exact market and time period. After the match, save the regulation-time result separately from any extra-time or shoot-out result. If the match is abandoned, postponed or its status is unclear, consult the applicable rules rather than forcing it into a win or loss.
This also keeps your software evaluation consistent: do not grade one prediction over 90 minutes and another after 120 minutes simply because the latter comparison looks better.
