England vs Argentina Prediction: World Cup Semi-Final in Atlanta

England vs Argentina World Cup 2026 semi-final prediction. Kick-off details, tournament form, head to head history and our software's model probabilities for Wednesday's game in Atlanta.

England vs Argentina Prediction: World Cup Semi-Final in Atlanta

England vs Argentina in a World Cup semi-final. It does not get much bigger than this. The two old rivals meet in Atlanta on Wednesday 15 July with a place in Sunday's final against France or Spain on the line. It is their first meeting of any kind since 2005, their first competitive meeting since 2002, and the first time Lionel Messi has ever faced England.

Key takeaway: England are chasing their first World Cup final since 1966. Argentina are the reigning champions and have never lost a World Cup semi-final, winning all five they have played. Independent models rate this tie close to a coin flip.

How England got here

Thomas Tuchel's side have not always been convincing, but they keep finding a way. An uneven group stage that included a draw with Ghana was followed by a win over DR Congo, then a memorable 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca where Jude Bellingham scored twice. Bellingham struck another brace in the quarter-final as England came from behind to beat Norway in extra time.

Harry Kane and Bellingham have six goals each, the first time two players from the same country have reached six or more at the same World Cup. The concern is at the other end. England have conceded in three of their last five games, and Ezri Konsa is suspended for this one, so the back line will need reshuffling against the tournament's most productive attack.

How Argentina got here

The holders have won all six of their games, but three of the knockout ties went the distance. Cape Verde took them to extra time in the round of 32, Egypt led them 2-0 with eleven minutes left before Argentina scored three, and Switzerland pushed them to extra time again in the quarter-final before Julian Alvarez settled it.

Messi has eight goals, the joint most at the tournament, and has extended his all-time World Cup record to 21. Argentina's 17 team goals are the most of any side, one short of their all-time best tournament tally set back in 1930.

The history

These two have met 14 times and England have lost only twice in normal time, but the losses tend to be the ones everyone remembers. Maradona's Hand of God in 1986, the penalty shootout defeat in 1998 after David Beckham's red card, then Beckham's redemption penalty in the 1-0 win in 2002. The most recent meeting was a 3-2 England win in a 2005 friendly.

What our software says

We ran the fixture through our World Cup prediction software. The figures below are the model's probabilities, not guarantees.

Market Model probability
[Match outcome] [XX.X%]
[Over 1.5 goals] [XX.X%]
[Over 2.5 goals] [XX.X%]
[Both teams to score] [XX.X%]
[Most likely correct score] [X-X]

[Two or three sentences interpreting the output once the figures are in.]

How to read these numbers

A probability is a measure of likelihood, not a promise. A 70% probability means the model expects that outcome roughly seven times in ten under similar conditions, which also means it expects it not to happen three times in ten. Semi-finals are typically tighter and lower scoring than earlier rounds, and single matches can always defy the numbers. Use model output as one input alongside your own judgement, and never stake more than you can afford to lose.
